A History of the EOGSA and the formation of the Bill Galbriath memorial tournament
EOGSA was originally formed in the late 80`s by a group of Eastern Ontario Superintendents who, as a group, felt that they needed a forum to occasionally get together, play a little golf and exchange stories as an outlet for the daily grind with which we are all so familiar.
The original founding members included Bill Galbriath (Bayview Golfing Center), Jim Burlington (Bay of Quinte), Jack Gorman (Poplars Golf) and also the late Tony Martin (Trenton Golf). The group as well as other regional Superintendents informally gathered once a month at their various clubs, played 9 holes of golf followed up by a BBQ at the maintenance shops for a cold beer and some networking.
Over the years the group grew to include many of the industry suppliers and the boundaries also expanded to include a great many courses from Peterborough, Port Hope and the Cobourg area. As it grew however, the informal character of the now more structured association remained constant, a social gathering with a little golf, BBQ and perhaps a cold beer.
With Bill Galbraiths passing in 1998 after a battle with cancer the Association decided that a yearly Memorial tournament in his name would be held and that any revenues generated from the day would be donated to Camp Trillium, a practice that still continues to this day. The Galbraith Trophy also remains with victors for a year and recently the defending Champions are provided with Limo transportation to the following years event.
The original tournament was held at the Bayview Golfing Centre that September and Jack Gorman was victorious in a one hole playoff. Over the years the Bill Galbraith Memorial has continued to prosper and now each September the event draws support from all over Eastern Ontario, the Ottawa Valley as well as the greater Toronto area. Many former members of the EOGSA whose careers have moved elsewhere make a point of returning every year and that has seen full field events over the last 3 years and certainly ensures the continued growth and success of not only the Tournament but also the EOGSA as well.
